HVAC Equipment: The Various Types & Their Usage
The acronym HVAC actually signifies 'Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, and Cooling' and the various equipments like duct, heaters, air conditioners etc. used in this purpose are called HVAC equipments. The methods of constructing, installing and servicing of heating, cooling and ventilation equipments and systems fall under the category of HVAC services. Besides regulating temperature and humidity, maintaining safe and healthy conditions is also necessary in office and industrial buildings as well as in aquariums. The HVAC equipments play a major role in these areas. The principles of heat transfer and thermodynamics are the basis of these heating, air conditioning and ventilation processes. For providing ventilation, reducing air infiltration and maintaining pressure relationships between spaces, HVAC systems are truly effective. 'Sizing' and selecting HVAC equipments and systems are the duty of contractors of small buildings. For larger buildings, specialty mechanical contractors construct these equipments after engineers examine, plan and specify the HVAC systems. For looking after the high standards of HVAC equipments, various regulatory bodies like ASHRAE, AMCA, ACCA and SMACNA have been established. Of late, countries like USA, UK, Australia and Canada are following the international standards created by ICC.
Duct Heaters
In order to heat up moving gas streams, duct heaters are put into use. For heating the air that moves through the heater, the duct heaters are installed in the middle of a moving air or gas stream. If you want to heat an object luminously at the end of a moving gas stream, then too you are required to use a duct heater. After heat gets transferred through the heater to the gas, it is again passed on to the object at the stream's end. In places where a conventional heater cannot be set up, this indirect heat transfer process is extremely helpful. Cooling options, explosion proof housings, finned heating elements, integrated thermostats; thermocouple wells and adjustable thermostats are some of the common features of duct heaters. Consisting of a custom heater design, some products are suitable for cryogenic use. Certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), other duct heaters boast of corrosion resistant capacity. Aluminum, steel, stainless steel and iron are common sheath materials of duct heater. Several insulation options like no insulation, fiberglass insulation, ceramic insulation, mineral insulation and mica insulation are available for these heaters. While zeroing on any duct heater, you are supposed to consider some parameters like maximum operating or sheath temperature, watt density, AC voltage required watts and AC voltage phase.
Room Air Conditioners
In industrial, networking and process computing areas where thermal management is necessary, room and building air conditioners are brought into play. If managing local heat sources or controlling total heat is required, then space and spot cooling equipments are applied. CFC-free refrigerants are widely used in air conditioners. In computer or network rooms, workspace, laboratories, classrooms and hazardous locations, installing an air conditioner is somewhat mandatory. They are also utilized if process or plant cooling, spot cooling and comfort cooling are necessary. Thermostatic control, safe and explosion proof construction, condensate evaporator and alarm or fault detection systems are some features generally found in room air conditioners. NEMA or IP rating, portability, mounting types and of course, cooling capacity are some of the specifications of air conditioner that need proper consideration.
Breathing And Ventilation Air Systems
For workers in perilous industrial environments, breathing and ventilation air systems play a major role of dependable and safe air supply sources. Air filtration, air purification, air ventilation and industrial ventilation systems are the various types of breathing and ventilation air systems. These equipments have applications in different industries. In oil refineries, pulp and paper mills and petrochemical plants, the usage of air intake systems can be noticed. Moreover, in manufacturing metals, steel and glass, air systems act as effective equipments. For substituting carbon dioxide gas with fresh air, breathing systems are put into effect. In order to get rid off welding fumes, oil mists, dust and solvent vapors, breathing and ventilation air systems are employed in industrial settings.
Specialty HVAC Equipments
Specific or proprietary products and services regarding HVAC come under the category of specialty HVAC equipments. For controlling the temperature inside a building, modern set-ups make use of diverse specialty HVAC equipments like oil furnaces, radiant-floor heating systems, heat pumps, ventilation systems, blowers and heat exchangers. HVAC ductwork, HVAC chillers and HVAC controls are prominent examples of specialty HVAC equipment. From schools to workplaces and from residential locales to industries - the areas of application of these equipments are profound. If water and energy are needed to a great extent, then HVAC tools become the ultimate resort in drug developing and biotechnology industries. For ensuring preservation of prehistoric artifacts, these tools are utilized in museums. In areas of scheduling, delivering and maintaining, HVAC software has been developed for controlling HVAC systems. Obeying ABS and SOLAS standards is crucial while designing and installing specialty HVAC equipments.
HVAC Ductwork
To conduct air from and to an air-handling unit, HVAC ductwork is put into practice. Pipe or closed conduits made of fiberglass boards, sheet metals or other apposite materials come under HVAC ductwork.
HVAC Controllers
In order to monitor and manage the performance of HVAC systems in buildings, HVAC controllers are put into action. For achieving and maintaining desired levels, these devices control cooling and heating by keeping an eye on temperature, humidity and other environmental factors. HVAC controllers are available in web-enabled, computer-programmable and Ethernet-ready varieties. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), SCADA (Supervisory Data Acquisition and Control) functionality and HMI (Human Machine Interface) are some of the prime features of HVAC controls. Various control systems like limit control, non-linear or advanced control, linear control, feedforward control and PID control are observed in HVAC controllers. Form factor and mounting style, input and output types and number of inputs and outputs are some important parameters for HVAC controllers.
HVAC Chillers
In commercial and industrial applications, refrigeration systems called HVAC chillers are extensively used. In these systems, oils, water or some other fluids are used as refrigerants. A compressor, reservoir, stabilization assembly, condenser, evaporator and thermal expansion valve are some essential components of HVAC chillers. The high-pressure, superheated gas created by compressing the refrigerant is air-cooled to a warm liquid with the help of the condenser. The refrigerant is released into the evaporator through the TXV (Thermal Expansion Valve). Thus, the warm liquid is changed into a dry and cool gas. By letting the hot gas to heat up the evaporator, a hot gas bypass is frequently used for stabilizing the cooling output. The chilling cycle starts all over again after water gets pumped from the reservoir to the compressor.
A local or remote control panel coupled with pressure and temperature indicators is present in HVAC chillers. You can also come across an integral pump, emergency alarms and microprocessor controls in some devices. Mounting the equipments on rooftops or exteriors of building is possible too. On the basis of application requirements, modular systems of HVAC chillers can be configured. In order to pump water to coils in various building parts, HVAC chillers are employed in air conditioning systems. While cooling plastics, large-scale medical equipments like MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) devices, laser cutting machines and printing equipments, HVAC chillers are widely applied.
In terms of cooling specifications, condenser cooling method and process pump specifications; HVAC chillers vary to some extent. Cooling capacity, compressor motor horsepower and fluid discharge temperature are some cooling conditions for HVAC chillers while pump rating, process pressure and process flow are incorporated under process pump specifications. Air-cooled and water-cooled devices and remote air or slit systems help in condenser cooling methods.
